It took six months for the whole of The Beneath to find out. I'm surprised it took that long, to be honest, and I'm very pleased to have been able to say that it wasn't my fault.

They were a horrible six months, for all of us, but Noah in particular felt like he was being torn in half. I tried to hide my pain and jealousy from him, but he always knew, and it couldn't always be contained. Even if I didn’t say the words, he saw it in my face.

Then there was Jane, who would switch from being cold and bitter, to being the perfect, doting wife. It was hard for her too, I knew that, however, I couldn’t help but feel like my heart mattered more than her ego. Jane was married to, and occasionally having sex with a robot. Noah was there, but he wasn't. He didn't want to make it horrible for her, so he was generous with her, but that only served to make things more confusing for Jane.

Jane had tried to keep herself emotionally distant and to treat it like a job, but she couldn't turn her emotions off when it came to the sex. Especially, as she was enjoying it, and as far as she was concerned, Noah was too. She started trying to work that angle, and tried to tempt him, seduce him, even. She seemed to think that she had a way to make him happy, to make him hers, to make their marriage real, and to be rid of me. Unfortunately for her, Noah could tell what she was doing, and the harder she tried, the higher his wall became.

It took its toll on him, and I had to deal with the Other Noah more than once. Then, when I woke up to the fact that I was partially causing it, I gave myself a stern talking to. Noah hadn't wanted the marriage. He'd been fighting it since he was eighteen. He only agreed to it because I asked him to. Because I asked him to help me in my lifelong mission to keep Adam safe. I knew what it involved, and I still asked him, and he loved me enough to do it.

He loves me. He's mine. What we have is real. What we have is the truth. That became my mantra, and I repeated it over and over until it sank in, and I found a way to live with it.

The night that the secret came out was on one of my nights off. Not just a night off from The Dome but a night off from Noah. In truth, I didn't want a night off from Noah, but it was better to think of it that way, than thinking of it as what it really was — Jane's turn.
